Minister Aladrović and Minister Bedeković to the European Parliament's Employment Committee

Brusells, 22 January 2020 -  Josip Aladrović, Minister of Labour and Pension System, and Vesna Bedeković, Minister of Demography, Family, Youth and Social Affairs, outlined the programme and priorities of the Croatian Presidency in the field of employment and social policy to the Employment and Social Affairs Committee of the European Parliament. 

In his opening address, minister Aladrović explained that the Croatian priorities are based on the common European values, mutual interests and respect of different perspectives, focusing on the wellbeing, safety and needs of the European citizens. Furthermore, minister emphasized the importance of implementing the European Pillar of Social Rights and its principles as an excellent basis for future structured efforts in the field of employment and social policy. He added that the Croatian Presidency will support wide implementation of the Pillar principles in this institutional cycle and take care of vulnerable groups in accordance with the principles.

"Strengthening digital skills is crucial for the global competitiveness of the EU economy that has to keep up with the technological developments of the leading world economies", explained minister Aladrović referring to the skills development, reskilling and upskilling as one of the priorities in the field of employment and social policy. He announced that the Croatian Presidency will organize ministerial conference on the importance of skills for strengthening competitiveness in Dubrovnik on 12 and 13 May. 

Second priority of the Croatian Presidency in the field of employment is well-being at work, with an aim of preserving and creating quality jobs, and further improving work safety and work-life balance, explained the minister. Furthermore, he stressed the importance of dialogue and exchange of views on important issues with social partners and other stakeholders in the labour market.

"Achieving our common goals in the spirit of friendship, compromise and cooperation will ensure that Europe continues to develop and remains, as our slogan says strong in the world full of challenges”, minister concluded.

Minister Bedeković presented priorities in the field of social policy, focusing on overcoming demographic challenges and the future of social policy, as well as on strengthening gender equality and women's position in the labour market. Minister Bedeković outlined the activities and key initiatives of the Croatian Presidency for strengthening the social dimension of the EU, as well as further elaborated the issues of the European Pillar of Social Rights, children guarantee, social housing and homelessness, improving rights of people with disabilities, and overcoming demographic challenges.
